APP Track to feature new developments in gene therapy, pharmacogenomics, palliative care, and more

The Advanced Practice Provider Track at the 2025 Tandem Meetings | Transplantation & Cellular Therapy Meetings of ASTCT® and CIBMTR® includes one day featuring topics of interest to all providers and one day of dedicated, parallel sessions for providers of pediatric care and of adult care.

“We pride ourselves in staying up to date in clinical practice and bringing the latest and greatest sessions,” said Track Chair Chelsea Honstain, NP, an advanced practice nurse at University of Michigan Health. “APPs across the country, and in many parts of the globe, are offering a huge portion of clinical care to our transplant recipients. It’s really important as this field evolves, just like any other field of medicine, for people to stay up to date on all realms of care.”

The APP Track sessions will begin with SIG Updates & Lifetime Achievement Award at 8 a.m. on Feb. 13. Lifetime Achievement Award and Rising Star Award recipients will be recognized before the scientific sessions and other activities begin.

“Day one of the APP Track is really geared toward topics that are globally applicable to both pediatric and adult providers. It also is enticing to nursing and pharmacy, in addition to our bedside providers,” Honstain said. “On day two, we break out into both pediatric and adult tracks that run side by side. The time slots match up, so you can hop back and forth between sessions, and these track rooms are right next to each other, so it’s easy to do.”

Among the hot topics in this year’s APP Track are Gene Therapy for Hematologic Disease at 8 a.m. on Feb. 14, which has recently gained U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval, Updates in Neuroblastoma Therapy at 1 p.m. on Feb. 14, and approaches to clinical research. During APPs in Clinical Research, at 10:15 a.m. on Feb. 13, three APPs who work in a variety of settings that apply to clinical research will offer their expertise and guidance on different aspects of care and how APPs can be involved.

“Another exciting topic is transplant for nonmalignant disease. We try to include something in that realm every year so people can stay up to date. This year, Elie Haddad, MD, PhD, from the University of Montreal is offering a presentation on transplant for severe combined immunodeficiencies for those that work in nonmalignant disease,” Honstain said. The pediatric session Transplant for SCID will begin at 8:45 a.m. on Feb. 14.

Honstain also expects high interest in the following sessions: Fever of Unknown Etiology on Feb. 13 at 1:45 p.m.; the Feb. 14 pediatric sessions, Pharmacogenomics in the Pediatric BMT Patient at 9:30 a.m. and Palliative Care on Consult: Support Difficult Decisions in the Transplant Patient at 11:15 a.m.; and the adult session A Joint Effort: Managing Safe Marijuana Use in the BMT Patient at 10:30 a.m.

“There’s also a great session on universities that have been able to move their chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR-T) therapy programs outpatient,” Honstain said, referencing the adult session Outpatient CAR-T at 2:30 p.m. on Feb. 14. “This is especially applicable to smaller centers or bigger centers that have space issues like in Chicago, New York, those cities that just don’t have the physical capacity to house these patients.”

To get the most out of the Tandem Meetings experience, Honstain advises attendees to preplan their daily itineraries.

“Be prepared, and don’t be too intimidated to introduce yourself to someone who you find interesting or the person you’re sitting next to,” she said. “It’s really the best way to build relationships.”

Throughout the APP program, there will be information on how to sign up as a mentor or mentee in a new mentorship program.

“This track specifically is attended by so many more disciplines than just APPs. We have a large amount of fellows, junior faculty, and pharmacy that attend, as well as more senior nurses who have a desire to gain more knowledge outside of their own track, so it’s exciting to see the crossover of disciplines despite having a track option open to them,” Honstain said.

Once the APP Track sessions have concluded on Feb. 14, there will be a special reception at 6:30 p.m. to encourage networking among attendees.

“We cannot comment enough on the importance of networking with other colleagues in the field, especially for APPs who may be traveling from smaller institutions where they might not have an opportunity to meet others,” Honstain said. “They might be the sole provider in their university or in their health system. A lot of career-building opportunities are offered through networking.”

Registration for the reception is not required.
